This was Siberia or Solitary confinement at the Old Idaho Penitentiary. They built this I believe in the 50′s to replace the dungeon hole in the ground which I showed in a previous post.  These cells were very narrow with a small hole in the ceiling to let in light.  Rumor has it many went insane from their time spent here.

This is one of the original ” Holes” or solitary confinement.   Looked very unpleasant down there.

This is the old steam factory just outside the main prison wall. I’m not sure how long they used this building, it’s still full of coal, but it doesn’t look like they plan on restoring this one.

If you are ever in Boise, make time for a tour of the historic Old Penitentiary.   It mixes the beauty of the new rose gardens and old sandstone buildings with the original harsh cellblocks, and the reality of what life could have been like within the walls.

There were so many interesting aspects of this old penitentiary I thought I would share some more images.

Spent some time photographing the old penitentiary in Boise the other day.  This prison was open from 1870 to 1973 when a severe riot caused them to move the prisoners to a more modern facility.  Quite an interesting place to spend the day.
